The first wooden elevators were built in 1866 to store grain. These grain elevators burnt in 1889, were rebuilt, and were the victim of another fire in 1905. The elevators were rebuilt in 1907 with concrete and steel. Vessels from Europe still come to the Goderich Harbour to get grain, while most of the salt is shipped to ports in the United States like Chicago, Milwaukee, Toledo, and Duluth.
