Date: 1894
Associated Place: London, ON
Item #: M960.0165.001
This lithograph stone is a block of limestone with the two main sides smoothed. Along one rough edge is painted "1165". One surface is a bill of sale base. On it is printed, "James Wright and Co. / Wholesale/ Iron and Steel/ Carriage and Wagon Hardware/ Iron Pipe and Fittings/ London, Canada / Established 1894". Also included is a list of articles sold by the firm. On the opposite surface are seven pictures of buildings, animals, travelling scenes, and a crest - all of which can be reproduced. To make a print from the plate, the picture is traced on the surface with a grease pencil. The plate is wet with water and inked. The ink will stick to the grease but not to the water. The paper is placed on top of the surface and the design is transferred onto the paper. The surface must be rewatered and re-inked each time. The lithograph works on the principle that water and grease do not mix.
