A magic lantern, which is a type of image projector.  The lantern directs light through glass slides with photographic or painted images on them.  This lantern was originally lit by an oil map and was later converted to electric power.  The wooden slider is for changing and mounting the glass slides.  The lantern has a flip-down lens cover and focusing knob.
