“the beginnings of our chosen family”

Testimonial from former SHDHS Gender and Sexuality Alliance President:
The Gender Sexuality Alliance at South Huron was the beginning of a self- discovery journey for so many young, closeted, queer folx and their allies. The high school created a safe space where anyone knew they could discuss their daily troubles growing up in a small rural area, often with no LGBTQ+ influences. Through many events, workshops, and activities we educated, and provided resources for the town of Exeter and surrounding communities. Having been a member of the group for four years myself during high school, and being able to meet dozens of individuals impacted by our efforts in the local communities I can say first hand this group changes lives. Knowing you exist, are heard, and seen by others when you feel invisible, is the most empowering gift another person can give you. It was through our weekly meetings, monthly events, semi-annual regional gatherings etc. that we found the beginnings of our chosen family. The friends I have made will last a lifetime, and I will forever appreciate the experiences I was able to have because of a few great faculty members who believed in what we had to say, and our mission.
